By the end of this module parents should be able to interact appropriately with their child before, during and after a competition.

Competition parenting is one of the most difficult and challenging aspects of being a sport parent. The stressors parents experience appear to be particularly prominent in individual sports (e.g., golf, tennis, equestrian, athletics) where parents often have to communicate and interact with their child before, during and after a competition (roles more commonly associated with coaching!). Based on research exploring children’s preferences for parental behaviour* we offer a number of broad suggestions about how to interact with your child in these situations.
